Free ATS resume checker

The ATS resume checker that tells you exactly what to fix.

Upload your resume as a PDF or DOCX. Hireoo scores it out of 100 — can software read it, is it the right shape, do the bullets prove anything, does it match the roles you want — and lists what to add, remove or adjust in every section.

The short answer

How do I check my resume's ATS score for free?

Sign up for Hireoo's free Starter plan, upload your resume as a PDF or DOCX and run an analysis: you get an ATS score out of 100 and specific findings for every section — what to add, remove or adjust, and which keywords from the roles you target are missing. ATS, explained

What is an ATS score?

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software many companies use to receive applications, store resumes and let recruiters search them. When your resume goes in, the ATS turns the file into text and fields — your name, contact details, job titles, dates and skills — and recruiters filter and search that data, often by keyword and job title.

An ATS score is an estimate of two things: whether that software can read your resume cleanly, and how closely the content matches the jobs you want. There is no single official score — every checker, and every ATS, weighs things differently — so treat any number, ours included, as a to-do list rather than a grade.

Why it matters even when you email a recruiter

In India, popular openings — fresher and entry-level roles especially — can draw far more applications than a recruiter can read closely, so a resume that parses badly, or never uses the words of the job description, is easy to pass over. And even when you write to a recruiter directly, your resume often ends up in the company's ATS afterwards. An ATS-friendly resume is the safe default either way.

What an ATS-friendly resume looks like

  • One column, a standard font and plain section headings.
  • Real text rather than an image, with your contact details in the body of the page, not in a header or footer.
  • A clear job title and dates for every role.
  • Bullets that start with a verb and end with a result.
  • The words your target roles use — in your summary, your skills and your bullets.

What we check

What Hireoo's resume checker looks at

Your score out of 100 is built from four parts, each with its own score and its own findings.

  • Parseability

Can an ATS read your file?

    25% of score
    • Real, selectable text — not a scanned or photographed page
    • Your name, email and phone number where software can find them
    • Section headings an ATS recognises: Experience, Education, Skills
    • Work history, education and skills that can actually be extracted
    • A readable date on every role
  • Format

    Length, contact details and structure.

    20% of score
    • One page with under five years of experience; up to two after that
    • Enough substance — a very thin resume is flagged
    • A location, and profile links that are formatted correctly
    • Roles with no bullets, only one, or eight or more
    • A summary short enough to be read (flagged past about 100 words)
  • Content

    Action verbs and measurable impact.

    30% of score
    • Bullets that open with a strong action verb
    • A measurable result: a number, a percentage, time saved
    • Weak phrasing such as “responsible for” or “worked on”
    • Clichés such as “team player” or “results-driven”
    • First-person “I” and “my”, and bullets over 30 words or under 5
  • Keywords

A match against your target roles.

    25% of score
    • The skills and job titles your target roles ask for
    • Where each one appears: summary, skills, experience or projects
    • Skills you list but never show in a bullet
    • A long skills list padded with things your target roles don't need

Findings

From a score to a fix list

Every finding names the section, what to do there and why. Here is part of the change list for a fictional fresher.

The score tells you how far you are; the change list tells you what to do, in the order you'd edit a resume — summary, skills, experience, projects. Each change is one of three kinds:

  • AddSomething your target roles ask for is missing — a skill, a summary line, a section.
  • AdjustIt's there but in the wrong place or unproven — name the role up top, back a skill with a bullet.
  • RemoveIt costs you attention — an overlong skills list padded with things nobody asked for.

On Hireoo Pro you tick the changes you want and the AI rewrite applies them. Removals start unticked, because taking things out is your call.

  1. AdjustSummary

Name the role you are targeting — Data Analyst — in your summary.

It's the role you search for. ATS title filters look for it in the first lines.

  2. AddSkills

Add SQL to your Skills section.

Most of the roles you target ask for it.

  3. AdjustExperience

Show SQL in a bullet under Analyst Intern at Acme Retail — what you built or ran with it, and the result.

You told Hireoo you have it; a bullet carries far more weight than a word in a list.

  4. AdjustExperience

Back up Power BI with a bullet under Analyst Intern at Acme Retail; right now it only appears in your Skills list.

Keyword filters count it, but a recruiter skimming your bullets won't see it.

  5. RemoveSkills

Trim skills that none of your target roles ask for — Internet browsing, Typing, MS Paint, Video editing and 3 more.

Your Skills section lists 31 items. A shorter, targeted list keeps the ones that matter visible.

Practical tips

How to raise your ATS score

Fix what stops software reading your resume first, then the bullets, then the keywords. Most of these take minutes.

1. Make the file readable

  • Export, don't scan. Save from Word or Google Docs as a PDF, or upload the DOCX. A scanned or photographed resume has no text layer, so an ATS sees nothing. Quick test: open the PDF and try to select a sentence. If you can't, export it again.
  • Keep contact details in the body. Put your name, phone number (with +91) and email as plain text at the top of page one, not in a header, footer or image — some parsers skip those areas.
  • Use plain section headings: “Experience”, “Education”, “Skills”, and “Projects” if you're a fresher. A creative heading such as “My Journey” may not be recognised as a section at all.
  • One column, no tables or text boxes. Many parsers read straight across the page, so a two-column layout can come out with your skills mixed into your job history.
  • Date every role the same way, for example “Jun 2024 – Present”. A role without a readable date is hard to place.

2. Write bullets that carry weight

  • Start with an action verb: built, reduced, launched, automated, analysed, negotiated. Replace “responsible for”, “worked on” and “helped with” — they describe a duty, not what you did.
  • Add a number: time saved, users, revenue, accuracy, tickets closed, cost cut, a rank in a competition. An honest estimate (“about 30%”) is fine.
  • Keep each bullet to one or two lines — roughly 5 to 30 words — and give each recent role three to five of them.
  • Cut clichés and “I”. “Hard-working team player” tells a recruiter nothing; a result shows it.

BeforeResponsible for preparing weekly sales reports.

AfterAutomated the weekly sales report in Python and SQL, cutting preparation time from 6 hours to 40 minutes.

3. Match the words of the roles you want

  • Mirror the posting's exact terms. If postings say “Power BI”, don't write only “BI tools”. Spell an acronym out once: “Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)”.
  • Name your target title in the first line of your summary — “Data Analyst with two years of experience in SQL, Python and Power BI.”
  • Prove your top skills in bullets, not only in the skills list, so a recruiter skimming your experience sees them in action.
  • Keep the skills list focused. Twenty-five loosely related items bury the five that matter.
  • Tailor by role family, not by every job. One version for data analyst roles and one for business analyst roles is usually enough.
  • Don't stuff keywords or hide white text. A person reads the resume after the software does, and it reads as a trick.

4. Freshers: a one-page resume that works

With no full-time experience yet, your education and projects are the evidence. A clean order is: a two-line summary naming the role, then education (degree, college, graduation year, CGPA or percentage), projects, internships, skills, and finally certifications and achievements.

  • Treat projects as experience. For each one: the problem, the tools, your part and a result — accuracy, users, a hackathon rank.
  • Class 10 and 12 marks: many freshers include them and some campus processes ask for them; keep each to a single line.
  • Swap the objective for a summary. “To work in a challenging environment…” says nothing. “Computer science graduate (2026) targeting backend developer roles; built three Python and SQL projects” says plenty.
  • Stay on one page. If it spills over, cut the weakest project, not the font size.

5. Experienced: what changes

  • Lead with experience. Education moves to the bottom, and school marks go.
  • One page under about five years of experience; two is fine after that — the same rule Hireoo checks against.
  • Show scope: team size, budget, users, the scale you worked at.
  • Give older roles two or three bullets and spend the space on your last two jobs.
  • Leave your CTC off the resume. Pay is a conversation, not a resume line; put your notice period in your application email instead.

Naukri-style resume or one-page resume?

Many Indian job portals encourage long, everything-included resumes, and plenty of candidates carry personal details over too: date of birth, marital status, father's name, a photo and a closing “Declaration”. For private-sector roles — and especially when you email a recruiter directly — a focused one-page resume tends to work better: it parses cleanly, and a recruiter can take it in at a glance. Drop the personal details and the declaration unless an employer asks for them, as some government and PSU applications do. Keep your portal profile as detailed as you like, and send the one-page version.

Once the resume is ready, the next two things a recruiter reads are your cover letter and your email to HR. Hireoo writes both for every job — see how it works.

Straight answers about ATS scores, file formats and what the checker does.

Yes. On the free Starter plan you get one full resume analysis a month — the score, every finding and the section-by-section change list — with no credit card. You do need a free account, so your resume and your target roles can be saved. Hireoo Pro (₹499/month) removes the monthly cap and adds the AI rewrite.

There is no universal standard: every checker, and every ATS, weighs things differently. On Hireoo's 100-point scale, 85 or above generally means your resume reads cleanly and matches your target roles well, 70 to 84 is good with a few fixes left, and below 50 usually points to a file an ATS struggles to read or a large keyword gap. Fix the critical and high-severity findings first.

Both work, as long as the file contains real text. A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs keeps your layout exactly as you designed it; a DOCX is the safer choice when a company portal asks for Word. Avoid scanned or photographed resumes: they hold a picture of text, which an ATS cannot read.

From the roles you're going after: what you've told the agent about the job you want and your skills, the searches you run and the jobs you apply to. For each keyword it checks where it appears — summary, skills, experience or projects — and tells you where to add it or how to back it up.

You tick the changes you want from the change list, and Hireoo rewrites the whole resume in one go: missing keywords added, proper bullets for every role, kept to one page. The result is saved as a new version with a before-and-after comparison. Your original resume is never replaced.

Yes. With under five years of experience, one page is what Hireoo checks for and what most recruiters expect. Lead with education and projects, give each project two or three bullets with a result, and leave out the objective statement and personal details such as date of birth or marital status.

No checker can promise that. A readable, well-matched resume gets you past the first filter; you still need to apply to roles that fit and reach the right person. That is what the rest of Hireoo does: it finds fresh openings, ranks them against your resume and sends a cover letter from your own Gmail.
